Stem Cells: Promises and Problems
Whitehead Spring Lecture Series for High School Students
April 19-21, 2005
They have been called the body’s own self-repair
kit; blank slate cells that can transform into a stunning
array of specialized cells that make us what we are.
Considered the next great frontier in life sciences,
stem cells hold unusual promise for understanding basic
cell biology and for possibly treating disease.
During the 2005 Whitehead Lecture Series for High School
Students, participants learned how leading biologists
are using stem cells to answer many of the most fundamental
biomedical questions. Speakers included Whitehead Institute’s
Harvey Lodish
and Bob Weinberg,
and Harvard University’s Kevin Eggan. Students
also participated in break-out sessions, toured laboratories
(Whitehead and off-site biotech labs), and had lunch
with young Whitehead scientists.
