Meet the guests:
Narrator—Susan Whitehead, Vice Chair of the Whitehead Board of Directors |
 |
Susan Whitehead is a former trial attorney
who worked as a prosecutor in New York City and in private practice in
Boston. Her interests span two major areas: science and social justice
issues. She has served as the chair of several organizations, including
Whitehead Institute, Planned Parenthood
League of Massachusetts and Research Institute for Learning
and Development. As an avid art collector, she is committed to surrounding
Whitehead scientists with thought-provoking paintings, photographs and sculptures. |

|
|
Sandra McAllister, Whitehead postdoctoral researcher |
 |
Sandra McAllister's views on the scientific
process changed under the guidance of Whitehead Member Robert Weinberg,
who encouraged her to think about problems from different angles and make
connections between seemingly disparate research studies. She now sees
science as an art and believes in taking creative leaps to make progress
on fundamental biological problems. Her own research explores cancer
as a systemic disease. |

|
Sam Tan, Boston-based painter |
 |
Sam Tan is an emerging artist who sees a connection
between his creative process and that of scientists. He recently exhibited
works at the Bernard Toale Gallery in Boston and Pierogi in Brooklyn. He
has been awarded scholarships from the Bertha Walker Foundation and his
works have appeared in various publications, including the Harvard Advocate.
Many of his pieces contain forms that suggest
the shapes of living organisms. View some of Tan's
work. |
