The Whitehead Press Seminar gives reporters an insider’s look at cutting-edge trends in basic biomedical research, explained by world class scientists.
This year’s seminar highlighted major advances in the past year in embryonic and adult stem cell science. Researchers discussed the extraordinary progress being made in creating and manipulating induced pluripotent stem cells, embryonic-stem-cell-like cells that hold enormous potential for clinical medicine. They also outlined newly understood mechanisms in cancer stem cells, blood stem cells, and the remarkably powerful stem cells that allow planarian flatworms to regenerate themselves from tiny body fragments.
