Genetics and weight loss: Diet does matter
|
| Description: |
Location: The Forsyth Institute
245 First Street, 17th Floor, Seminar Room A
Cambridge
Speaker: Kenneth Kornman, DDS, PhD
Founder &Chief Scientific Officer of Interleukin
Genetics
Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Periodontology
Summary: Long-term weight loss success with dietary modification has been extremely variable and disappointing, even in well-controlled clinical studies. Although reduced calorie intake is essential for weight loss, genetic differences have been shown to strongly influence the outcomes of both caloric excess and caloric restriction. Genetic heterogeneity may offer a partial explanation to differential responses to different diets. I will present the results from a recent study that shows 12 month weight loss can be improved by 2 to 3 fold by matching an individual’s diet to a pattern of variations in three genes that affect fat absorption and metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism. These findings will be discussed in terms of the clinical utility of genetic research.
