Stem cells, cancer and microbes: the emerging link
Description: Speaker: Bikul Das, MBBS, PhD, Medicine/Oncology, Stanford University Medical School
Location: The Forsyth Institute, Seminar Room A, 245 First Street, 17th Floor, Cambridge
Abstract: Stem cells have many properties that could be uniquely conductive for the host resistance and persistence of cancer cells and infectious agents including: limitless self-renewal, natural resistance to the immune system, expression of drug transport pumps and the ability to broadly circulate through a host. In this talk, Dr. Das will describe recent observations on the interaction between stem cells, cancer cells and microbes that challenges two paradigms of global health importance: the cancer initiation/progression, and host-pathogen interactions.
