Carrying on the family tradition

Susan, Peter and John Whitehead (shown at the dedication
of the Institute's new research wing in 1996) continue
to support the Institute. |

On February 2, 1992, Jack Whitehead passed away. “Jack's
death was a personal loss for all of us,” says
Gerald Fink, then Director of the Institute. “His
vitality and enthusiasm for science were part of the
essence of the Institute. He was a great philanthropist,
but he gave us much more than his financial support.
He was a constant source of encouragement and took great
joy in our achievements.”
“Fortunately for the Institute and for science,
Jack imbued his children with his own enthusiasm for
the Whitehead Institute,” Fink adds. “From
the start, Susan, Peter and John Whitehead contributed
their time and energy to Whitehead programs, but when
Jack died, their involvement skyrocketed. I can't think
of any other institution that has benefited from the
warmth, insights, and practical skills or the second
generation the way we benefit from the ongoing support
of the Whitehead family.”
